The Good Ole Days

In the good old days of the internet you could pretty much throw up some Google Ads or Banner ads on a website, get clicks and drive traffic back to your website with little or no problems. Clicks were cheap, there was almost no competition and you could always get a descent amount of traffic.

This simple system worked fine until users got used to those banners being at the top of the page and they simply started to ‘ignore’ them. The phrase “Banner Blindness” was created to describe this phenomenon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banner_blindness

The Phenomenon Spreads

Well now the exact same phenomenon has begun with the Google Adwords Network where an ever increasing percentage of users are ignoring the ads and are moving toward the more organic search results.

If you look at the screenshot below, you’ll see that while the two sponsored ads above the organic listings do get some attention, the ads on the right receive almost zero attention from the viewers.

The vast majority of the fixation is on the first two organic listings, with results 3 – 8 still receiving as much (or more!) attention as the top paid listings:

Where Are All The Clicks Going?

If you look at this screen shot, it’s easy to see exactly where the clicks are going:

The first ORGANIC (i.e. non-sponsored listing) receives 41 – 45% of the available traffic, and the second ORGANIC result receives 11 – 18% of the available traffic…

… 10 – 20 TIMES the amount of clicks as the first PAID listing.

I’ll say that again…10 – 20 TIMES more traffic than the top paid listing!

Just to put that into perspective…

If you’re getting 100 clicks a day from Google AdWords, your competitor who’s ranking #1 organically is getting 1000 – 2000 clicks a day!

Obviously it is very important that YOU are showing up in the “ORGANIC” results so that you can be getting all of that FREE TRAFFIC for yourself.

Now as far as I can tell, and from discussions with my Internet Marketing buddy’s, (some of whom make millions of dollars a year) there are 3 essential components to getting your website ranking at the top of the natural organic search engines.

1) Content,
2) Links AND
3) Activity are the essential ingredients to getting your website and pages ranking.

In other words your content has to be good. Nobody is going to comment or link to your content if it sucks, so be sure and create valuable, informative content for your website.

Links are when other high page ranked sites leave a signature that links back to yours, basically giving your website Qudos or Authority.

And Activity completes the Triad. No matter how great your content is and no matter how many sites link back to it, if no one is leaving comments, retweeting your content or subscribing to your feeds, then it is less likely to get noticed by the Google Bots as an important website on that particular topic.

Put simply… if your website just sits there unchanged and untouched, then it will lose position.

Furthermore, tests have shown that sites that:

1. Get more blog comments…
2. Generate more RSS subscribers (esp. via FeedBurner.com, which is owned by Google…), and…
3. Get a bump in overall traffic…

…have a tendency to move up in the rankings faster and stay there longer.

Activity Is The Missing Link…

Content and links are just too easy for ‘Black Hat’ marketers to manipulate, and Google recognized this which is why they won’t bother ranking a new site until it gets some traffic…even if the content is decent and the site is getting a steady flow of inbound links.

It’s like baking a cake…

Content and Links are the “ingredients” (i.e. flour, eggs, sugar, etc.)… ACTIVITY is the HEAT!

With Ryan’s “Ranking Triad” formula, Google gets the three things they want:

1. Quality CONTENT
2. Quality INBOUND LINKS, and…
3. Measurable ACTIVITY

And the truth is, to rank on the first page in most niche markets, you don’t need a whole lot of any of these three things.
