For the first 27 years of my life I was known as Chris Barber not Chris Reid

I WAS BORN as Chris Reid, lets get that straight. That is the name on my birth certificate but it was not the name I used growing up in the working class suburb of Hilton near Fremantle, Western Australia.

The beginning:

When my mother was a teenager she met a young merchant sailor from Greece or Yugoslavia (my mum cannot remember) who’s name was Christopher and was in port for less than 2 weeks.

They had a short affair, Christopher left and my mum became pregnant.

She decided she would raise me on her own as a single mum which of course wasn’t easy back in 1975.

So I was born as Christopher Michael Reid because that is the name of my mum.

Thanks mum for giving me life!

How I became Chris Barber:

A short time after I was born (less than 1 year) my mum met a man named Allan Barber and they got married.

They had a son (Ronald, my brother) and I became Chris Barber by default.

Less than 2 years of marriage and my mum Debbie and Allan split up, leaving Debbie with 2 young boys to raise on her own. She continued to use the name Barber.

As I went through pre-school, primary school (Hilton Primary), high school (South Fremantle High School), and junior football (Fremantle Hawks) I just assumed that name and never did much about it because you don’t when you are just a kid. You just accept the way things are.

Debbie had 2 more children, Neil and Katrina, both to separate fathers and now had 4 children, all from different men and all using the name Barber.

How things changed:

At 16 years of age I moved out of home, became a street kid in Perth for a while, met some nice people with dreams and a better outlook on life then I was brought up with who helped me out of that situation and slowly I started to see life differently.

At 19 I caught a Greyhound bus to Sydney and arrived with nothing more than a copy of my birth certificate and around $200 in my pocket.

I got work in bars and in the fashion industry and worked hard for 2 years before I managed to get myself into a TAFE course.

I paid my way through 4 years of fashion design school (still as Chris Barber,) when I finished I just kept working and saving with the idea to leave Sydney and travel around the world.

Becoming Chris Reid:

It was the decision to travel that led me to change my name from Chris Barber to Chris Reid.

As I needed a passport to travel, and I had my birth extract I came to the decision to become known as my rightful name of Chris Reid.

To get my passport I needed to use my original birth certificate and that is when I realized that I am and always have been Chris Reid and simply started calling myself by that name.

Time flies:

What is interesting is that using the name Chris Barber was a decision by my mum, it was not written in law. Changing my name to Chris Reid was a decision by me that took a long time to make, and has essentially felt like giving away an old life that was full of let downs and disappointments.

Since returning to my original name I have come to realize that what happens to us in life and what we make those events to mean are two separate things.

Whether I was Chris Reid or Chris Barber, I still have experiences and memories that make me uniquely who I am today.

An Exciting Future:

With the internet and Social Media sites like Facebook available to connect us with our past friends and relatives, I realize that through all my schooling, jobs and sporting teams, I have met thousands of people over the first 27 years of my life, and if any of them were to try and find me, they wouldn’t be able to because Chris Barber just disappeared.

So I decided to make this post with the hope that I can get it to show in the search engine results for Chris Barber so any old friends, team mates, school friends, family and work colleagues who look for me can find me, know what happened and get in touch with me.

We all have stories of how our life has evolved, and this is part of mine. Through self discovery and personal growth I have come to accept my unique life so far and to embrace its lessons that have helped to shape who I am.

I am not ashamed, embarrassed or resentful, in fact quite the opposite. I am a positive, healthy happy young guy with the world at my feet and my experiences have allowed me to meet amazing people and to experience life unlike most will ever have the chance.

So if you are an old friend of Chris Barber, you are my friend still. I just have a new name, my original name of Christopher Michael Reid.

Why Can’t I Make My Dreams Come True?….

For MOST of the worlds population the answer to this question is the difference between just surviving life and living a good life

If you believe in “The Secret” and the ‘Law of Attraction’ you would understand that we receive EVERYTHING we have asked for in our life and that it is our subconscious mind that controls what we receive.

The truth is… “Asking for what you want and GIVING what you want FIRST allows you to receive MORE than you can ever imagine.”

So if you have ever asked the question “Why can’t I make my dreams come true?” then it is possible that you are not being SPECIFIC about what it is you are asking for, AND you are not GIVING what it is you want FIRST.

If you want more love in your life…. go and be more loving to those around you.

If you want more friends in your life… go and be a friendlier person.

If you want a helping hand every now and then… go and help out those less fortunate.

If you want more recognition and respect from work mates and family…. try showing them the kind of respect that you want FIRST.

You see my friend, everything that you want in your life STARTS WITH YOU asking for it AND making the room for it in your life by SHOWING THE WORLD THAT IT IS ALREADY THERE through your actions and behaviours.

If you could have ONE WISH what would it be?…..

I bet if you really thought long and hard about it, after all of the thoughts and images of satisfying your own self interests you would be for a world where every one could fulfill all of their dreams without destroying the planet and live happily together in love, peace and harmony.

I believe most people deep down want that.

In 1968 Elvis Presley King of Rock & Roll made a triumphant return to performing live concerts when he recorded his comeback special with CBS.

At the end of the 68 Comeback Special Elvis sang “If I can Dream”, a song that asks the question“WHY can’t my dreams come true??”

Today, 42 years later and with the help of technology and youtube Elvis Presley & Celine Dion team up to remind us to dream of a better world. Not just for ourselves, but for EVERYONE!

Although the main line of the song is “Why can’t my dream come true” it actually is saying “Why can’t we get along?”

This year, in the midst of all the striving and growing and achieving and trying to do better and get more out of life for ourselves, do not forget to lend a helping hand to your friends, neighbors and relatives and those around you who could use your help.

Because that’s what’s really most important about life my friend… Sharing your skills, talent, ability’s and success with those around you.

When you do that you will receive more than you give. That is the “LAW.” The natural “law of the universe” called “The Law Of Attraction.”

Make this year YOUR year to dream bigger than you ever have before and to take the necessary actions towards making those dreams a reality, but to also reach out and help out to those who need you along the way.

When you do that you will attract the magical events, people and circumstances into your life to make all of your wildest dreams a reality.

DREAM bigger than you’ve ever DREAMED before and GIVE more than you’ve ever GIVEN before and you will RECEIVE more than you have ever RECEIVED before.

And you will never again need to ask the question “Why Can’t I Make My Dreams Come True?”

The other night I had the good fortune of meeting with Dr John DeMartini for a couple of hours while he was was between flights in Sydney on his way to New Zealand.

I almost wasn’t going to go. I thought to myself  ‘not another self help Guru’ trying to sell me a weekend coaching program or home study course.

But I’d been struggling to find purpose in my life after dissolving my network marketing business in June this year and something inside told me that I should go… and besides these events are a great place to network and meet like minded people right?

This guy was told by his first grade teachers that he would never amount to much, since he had dyslexia and couldn’t read nor comprehend what he was learning in school and left home at age 14 to hitch hike his way to Hawaii where surfed and hung out until he met a mentor who tapped him into his potential.

He went back to high school, went to college and became a doctor and has spent the last 37 years studying everything to do with human potential from Abraham Masloes theory’s of personality and motivation through to the what drives the great leaders to change the course of history and the world.

So his colourful background made for an entertaining speach I will say that.

Dr John DeMartini is all about getting you to ‘Break Through’ to discovering what your PURPOSE IN LIFE is that has brought you into this world.

And isn’t that what most of us want right?… to find purpose in our lives.

Most people on planet earth live in 1 of the 6 phases of life. The first 4 are “Self Orientated” meaning that they are all about ourselves. It is only when we can transcend the first 4 phases that our life has meaning, we feel fullfilled, we are serving others and we are on purpose.

1) Survival and Self: Food, clothing, shelter and reproduction are all that is of concern for those living in this phase of life. It is sad to say but there are many millions of people who are in unfortunate circumstances today who are living this life, a life not much better than our ancestors thousands of years before.

2) Security: When we finally are able to transcend the survival state and get some material possesions the first thing that we want to do is protect it. When we have a a home, car, job and a family our natural instinct is to make sure that no one steals our clothes and harms our family.

Many people today live in total FEAR that they will lose their job, or that their partners will leave them and they find it hard to escape this level of conscousness. This is the ignorant state.

3) Show Off: Have you noticed what happens when someone is able to afford the best of the material world? Do you recognise those show offs that have been ‘handed’ all of the nice things that money can buy and a good family can support?

This is the phase that comes when we have no purpose, and are living a life of “motivation” not of “inspiration.” We are motivated by vanity and the material world’s Social Acceptance of us. This state is all about social acceptance and feelings of worthiness through material wealth.

It is more fullfilling to be EMPOWERED than to be Entitled.

4) Self Esteem: People who live at this higher level are most likely involved in some sort of community service. They are the givers of this world. They constantly help out those in need around them and it gives them a feeling of purpose which they enjoy.

But they are still self inclosed meaning that they still live in the 1st 3 states at some level.

5) Self Fullfillment: This level of enlightenment only comes once we shake of the “self orientated” nature of the first 4 character traits. People who are ‘Self Fullfilled’ are those that contribute at a higher level such as doing great things for the city or the state in which they live.

Self fullfillment can only come when you contribute to a cause that is higher than yourself.

In this state EVERYTHING is about living larger. And everyone around these individuals is impacted. The family members have more prestige, the friendships are more significant as these individuals live to a higher order.

6) Spiritual Actualisation: These are the great leaders of the world who focus on GLOBAL causes and services that effect whole countrys and the world. The people living in this state are the people who change the world. Think of Bill Gates, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Terresa, Elvis Presley, Richad Branson, Oprah Winfrey.

Their legacy is that they changed the course of history and it is because they were ‘on purpose.’

When you reach levels 5 and 6 you are living your purpose in life because what you do each day ceases to be about just yourself. Where levels 1-4 are all self orientated, levels 5 and 6 are about “serving.” And that my friends is the answer to how you live a fullfilling life.

When you are Leading A Purpose Driven Life, it is because you care enough about humanity to deliver who you are to them. And that is what Dr DeMartini helps people to do… to find out WHO YOU ARE!

He helps you to find what it is that you were sent here to do so you can stop living life from the first 4 phases i.e the material world, and start to live from the 5th and 6th phases which is the ‘Inner World.’

His technique for helping you to discover your purpose is interesting and unique.

It is all about breaking down your fears that are holding you back in your life and to give yourself permission to shine. He teaches you to be a great builder AND destroyer of the transformational forces in your life so you can reach your purpose and make a difference to humanity.

The 3 Major Character Traits Of Leaders.

1) All the great leaders have had the ability to “IDENTIFY” what their core values are and then to live to them. They are able to prioritize their daily activity’s so they can work on what is highest to their values and they delegate the other tasks to those who do them based on their highest values.

Great leaders are also congruent with their highest values. You are either doing what you love or you are in love with what you do. The first love is living by your values and the other is changing your values to get by. Congruency is a MUST to leading a purpose driven life

2) The 2nd great trait that all the great leaders of history have in common is a “CLARITY OF VISION.” Those with a mission have a message and a vision that is clear and drives them to get out of bed each day.

When you start leading a purpose driven life you no longer need to be motivated because your values and your purpose inspire you.

3) And the 3rd major character trait of the great leaders is “CERTAINTY.” Leaders are certain. Have you ever followed a leader that was not sure where they were going? They wouldn’t be a leader for very long would they?

One way that you can have certainty in your life is to Learn To Ask Quality Questions. And through asking quality questions you will be better able to get inspired by your own life again.

So I am here to tell you friends, that I learnt all of that and much more in only 2 hours with Dr John DeMartini and if you ever get the chance to see him live then do it or go buy one of his books or dvd’s as it is an investment well spent.

This guy is a MASTER at helping you to discover your hidden potential, your highest values in life and then to encourage you to go and live them.

And when you are living at your highest values… you are leading a purpose driven life that brings you self fullfillment and spiritual actualisation and yes…. all of the wealth and abundance you could ever want and need.

So I got my hands on 2 tickets for his 1 day event “The New Psychology Of Success” in November… can’t wait!
