When you understand the bigger picture and are able to take a space shuttle view of the project, it allows you to plot points of progress along the way and determine costs, time and resources necessary.
That is like the outline for a movie or a book. Then comes the chapters which is like the progress points and then within each chapter you have the story line, which is the daily activities and accomplishments required to succeed.
